About Oil Painting Lessons…

Oil paint is a truly magical medium!

Although many of us are attracted to the results that only oil paint can achieve, past students have often expressed feeling intimidated by it, and unsure where to start. There really is an overwhelming amount of information and product out there... Luckily for you, I’ve tried most of it so that you don’t have to!

In private oil painting lessons, I will help to demystify the processes and materials of oil painting. Once you have formed a comfortable relationship with this kind of paint, I have found that it is one of the most forgiving, customizable, rich, and rewarding materials to create images with.

I hope that you and oil paint will become good friends.

We will cover things like: 

-How to use different kinds of paint brushes and palette knives

-Unique properties of oil paint and oil painting mediums

-How to set up your palette and mix colors

-Learning to see like a painter 

-Different surfaces for oil paint

-History and traditions of oil painting 

Prerequisites: 

-Just a sense of curiosity! No previous art experience needed, though some drawing experience is useful if you would like to paint more realistically.

What do you need to bring: 

-I will provide materials for our first lesson, and we will discuss what materials you will need to purchase moving forward. This will vary according to each student’s goals and interests. 

What is included: 

-Materials for our first lesson together. This includes your own canvas panel to take home later, use of my brushes, paints, and mediums. 

-Custom materials list tailored to your interests. 

-One-on-one instruction in my LIC studio space

-Focused discussion and critiques to help you discover your individual voice as an artist

-You will walk away from your first lesson with the knowledge of how to begin an oil painting on a canvas surface. At the end of our first meeting, you’ll have the beginning of a painting to continue working on in future lessons OR, if you do not want to jump right into images, we’ll start with a 5” x 7” sampler of oil painting techniques.
